Seven sages of the bamboo forest

The Seven sages of the Bamboo Forest refer to the seven famous men of the late Wei and early Jin dynasties: Ruan Ji, Ji Kang, Shan Tao, Liu Ling, Ruan Xian, Xiang Xiu and Wang Rong. Ji Kang says in the Book of Jin • Ji Kang Biography that he lives in the mountains, "The only people he contacts with are Chen Lu Ruan Ji and Hanoi Shan Tao, while the rest are Hanoi Xiangxiu, Peiguo Liu Ling, Ji Brother Zi Xian and Langye Wang Rong, thus making him a tour of the Bamboo Forest, the so-called 'Seven sages of the Bamboo Forest'." Ji Kang and other seven people are friendly, often swim together under the bamboo forest, wanders merrily. After using "bamboo banquet, bamboo Huan, bamboo tour, bamboo meeting, bamboo Xing, bamboo crazy, bamboo smile proud" refers to the unruly entertainment, or by referring to the friendship; "Seven sages" as a metaphor for literati of different customs. The relief of seven sages in the bamboo forest here reflects this light wind of fame and wealth.
